I haven’t been interested in anything put out by Nintendo for a long time, much less Zelda related. But Breath of the Wild’s visual style has been so striking for me that it’s become the first thing put out by Nintendo in a long time to get me REALLY interested. It also helps that the Gerudo ladies are back and they look stunning. I knew as soon as I saw the first screenshot of Urbosa that I was going to have to do some fanart of her. I originally started working on something with her but thought it might be good to try something a little different. All of Breath of the Wild looks like a more refined Windwaker with no line and just color. Lighting and atmospheric effects help differentiate one shape and figure from another to keep things from being simplified to the point of losing the form. So I wanted to try this in 2D.
Using only color placed over a sketch in photoshop I tried to emulate the breath of the wild style, I experimented first on an old thing of Myanna to see that it was sound and then went to do some Gerudos. I really like the results. It’s not a style I could do all the time, its very procedural and doesn’t allow for a lot of flexibility throughout the work, but for now I like how it’s come out and I had a lot of fun playing with it.
